Sam walked along the rocky shoreline, poking at the small creatures swimming lazily in the tide pools and gazing out at the ocean beyond. The sunlight glittered off the waves like a sea of small diamonds.
And then, in the distance, almost imperceptibly, something broke the surface of the water. It was large and disappeared quickly, but it was all Sam needed. For weeks, Sam would sneak away from his home in the remote seaside town and pace the shore, staring out into the mysterious abyss that lapped at the outskirts of his town. He waited impatiently to see the creature again, while his mind turned circles trying to imagine what else lived beneath the waves.
While exploring the beach, Sam stumbled upon an old fisherman mending his nets. The old man was gruff and his fingers didn’t quite work like they used to, but Sam’s charm and swift work were enough to soften the old fisherman. While they talked, the fisherman learned about Sam’s interest in the sea and offered to take Sam under his wing.
The ocean was frightful to the villagers, but not Sam. He spent his days, month after month, on the open water with the fisherman. During this time the fisherman taught him everything he knew about fishing, as well as traded stories about the adventures he had gone on during his life. The first lessons dealt with how to bait a hook and the importance of patience while waiting for a bite. But, as time went on, Sam began to learn more valuable lessons, like the balance of the ocean and the role fishermen play in preserving it.
Years later, when Sam was helping to captain the boat, he caught sight of it once again. Its scales glittered beautifully in the water. The fisherman told Sam that it was a mythical creature known as the Sea King and that it was said to bring good luck to those who caught it.
Sam was determined to catch the Sea King. He met the fisherman early the next morning and they set off. They fished for hours without a single bite, but just as the sun was starting to set, Sam felt a tug on his line. He fought with all his might, and finally, the Sea King broke the surface of the water.
The fisherman was amazed by Sam’s catch, and word of the Sea King’s capture quickly spread. Sam was hailed as a hero, now the most famous fisherman in his hometown.
His passion for fishing only grew stronger. He spent every waking moment perfecting his skills, learning new techniques, and exploring the ocean's depths. He made countless catches, each more magnificent than the last, and he became known as a very great fisherman.
Years went by, and Sam grew older and wiser. He passed on his knowledge to the next generation of fishermen, and he remained as passionate about fishing as he had been on that day when he caught the Sea King. He never forgot the thrill of the catch or the stories he had heard from the old fisherman who had taught him. He moved forward, always seeking out new adventures and new catches. Though he never caught another Sea King, he was content with the thrill of the catch and the connection he felt to the ocean, waterways, and all their secrets. He felt most at peace when he was on the water, surrounded by nothing but the sound of the waves and the cries of the seagulls. It was about the sense of community he felt with other fishermen as they shared stories and experiences and worked together to preserve the delicate balance of the lakes, streams, and oceans.
Although Sam is no longer with us, his passion for fishing lives on through us. We have taken the lessons he taught us and the love he had for the sea and turned it into a business that serves the fishing community.
